The 'Hour of Code' program for this year is now open for registration. Hour of Code is an annual event held to mark the International Computer Science Week. This week is celebrated every year on the 2nd week of December, worldwide. This is a 1-hour program that teaches computer science and coding skills with the aim of increasing participation in computer science.

Similar to the last 2 years, this year also the program will be held across the Maldives. The main event of the Hour of Code program will be held online this year on December 24th. This is an initiative of Women in Tech Maldives to celebrate Computer Science Week in Maldives every year. Dhiraagu is the exclusive partner of this year's program. The program is endorsed by the Ministry of Education.

Hour of Code is an international program open to all ages that teaches millions of students one hour of computer programming in more than 180 countries every year. The program was first introduced by Code.org. Women in Tech Maldives is an international partner for Hour of Code. Women in Tech Maldives conducted the event extensively across the whole of Maldives, in 2019, 2020 and 2021. Up to now, more than 10,000 students have participated in the program.

Interested participants can register to the program using the registration form available on the Women in Tech Maldives website (https://www.womenintechmv.org/hourofcode). Individuals, schools or institutes, can register to participate in the Hour of Code program. Members of Women in Tech Maldives and school teachers will be mentoring and guiding the participants on how to complete the hour of code.

Although the main event of Hour of Code will be held online on December 24, various physical sessions planned will be held in many schools across the country. These events will begin on the 10th of December and will be held in different schools and other institutes. So far, Hour of Code has been conducted in six schools in the Male’ and islands, including Kalaafaanu School, Imaaduddin School, Hiriya School, B. Goidhoo School, R. Hulhudhuffaaru School and Gn. Fuvahmulah School.

Hour of Code is a great way to introduce students of all ages to coding and spark interest for  computer science in the students. Learning computer science can increase their creativity and problem-solving abilities and skills. Starting to learn computer science at an early age is the foundation for success in every field in the 21st century.
